Dinner at the European Parliament on the recast of the Urban Wastewater Treatment
On May the 3rd, the MEP Water Group organised a dinner at the European Parliament on the recast of the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive (UWWTD). Hosted by MEP Pernille Weiss, it aimed to discuss different instruments to ensure the implementation of the new UWWTD and focused also on circularity and the need for a resource-oriented approach within the directive.
EU policymakers and representatives from the water ecosystem attended this dinner to bring their perspectives on wastewater management. They discussed energy efficiency within treatment plants, utilities’ gaps and opportunities, resource recovery as well as the relevance of an EU water fund to finance these improvements in wastewater treatments plants.
Therefore, the exchange stressed the once-in-a-generation opportunity to set up an ambitious legislation turning our urban wastewater treatment plants into energy efficient resources hubs. This ambition demands new financial drivers, implementation tools, and innovative solutions.
The next MEP Water Group Event will take place online on the 23rd of May from 2.00 to 4.00. It is co-organised with the UNESCO on partnerships and cooperation for water, bringing back the outcomes of the UN water conference of March 2023 and the conclusions of the UN Water Report 2023.
